As a student at the College of New Jersey in Princeton, Woodrow Wilson was known by his first name—not Thomas, but Tommy. When this photograph was likely taken, in 1875, he was enrolled as a freshman for the second time, having entered Davidson College two years earlier, only to drop out after completing his freshman courses. As at Davidson he gravitated toward other southerners in the student body, “taking the southern side and getting quite bitter” in arguments with his northern classmates about slavery and the Civil War.
