Ellen Clark Sargent was California’s leading suffragist in the 19th century. In 1872, when this photograph was taken, she was elected secretary of the National Woman Suffrage Association, joining Susan B. Anthony on the executive board. She served as president of the California Woman Suffrage Association and directed California’s statewide women’s suffrage initiative in 1896. She was still active at age 85, in the follow-on campaign of 1911, but died suddenly of heart failure only days before California women won their right to vote.
