Three years after this 1875 photograph, Republican U.S. Senator Aaron Sargent introduced the legislation that in the next century would be christened the Anthony Amendment. Husband of noted suffragist Ellen Sargent, he was for years Anthony’s closest ally in Congress. In 1871 the Sargents arranged for Anthony’s travel to the West Coast, hosted her in California, and traveled with her back across the continent. Sargent’s leadership spurred creation of Woman Suffrage Committees in both the House and Senate in 1882.
